Baby Not Poo'd For Five Days

by Bernie
(UK )

My 2 month and 1 week old has not poo'd for 5 days now. She did the same last week and poo'd on the 4th day, where it looked like a chunk of peanut butter.. in the meantime she gets real smelly gas and urinates like every 30 minutes or sometimes more :-) Any advice?

Tips when 2 months old baby isn't pooping

Hi Bernie!

Is your daughter breastfed? In such case this is completely normal and you can simply sit back and relax this short period of very few dirty diapers. If she is formula fed and seems to be constipated (pain and hard stools), click here for some advice and remedies. But since you are saying that the poop is soft, my guess is that everything is just fine.

Hope this helps,

Paula

Baby Not Poo'd for Five Days
by: Anonymous

Hi Bernie
My almost 5 month old has been doing infrequent poo over the last 10 days or so. He just went, and as you describe, was awful smelling and looked like a chunk of peanut butter (basically a more mucusy blob of peanut butter though)... have you found any explanation for this? My baby is exclusively breastfed. He used to go every day and the smell was text book like off yoghurt. This is pungent. I wonder could the smell be because it has been so long between poos? But why the mucus peanut butter blob? Cheers.

talk to your doctor
by: Ashley

Hi my daughter is now 4 months old she has a condition that is called hirshsprungs disease. It may not be that, but talk to the doc.To me it sounds somewhat alike. It is not normal for a baby to go that long without going.

symptoms of HD
by: Anonymous

There are other symptoms for a baby that has HD. It is something they have from birth, not just suddenly develop.

Symptoms in Newborns
Newborns with HD almost always fail to have their first bowel movement within 48 hours after birth. Other symptoms include

  • green or brown vomit

  • explosive stools after a doctor inserts a finger into the rectum

  • swelling of the belly, also known as the abdomen

  • lots of gas

  • bloody diarrhea

What is HD means?
by: Anonymous

My 10 weeks old daughter already doesn't has #2 for 6 day. I am very worry. And doctor said:doesn't need to go to the Emergency Room unless her stomach is distended (very large) or unless she is having pain, then she needs to be seen in the ER. However, you can try a small electronic thermometer with vaseline or a baby rectal suppository (glycerine) to see if she will have a bowel movement. Also, giving her extra water or juice with water will help keep her stools soft so she can go more easily.

But I saw someone said it may be HD. But can any one tell me what is HD meas?

Thanks

HD means Hirschsprung Disease
by: Paula (Easy Baby Life)

HD is an abbreviation for Hirschsprung Disease. It is a lack of the nerve cells in parts of the intestine. The cells (when present) signal to the intestine to push the stools towards the anus. When these cells are absent, the child will become severely constipated.

You can read all about Hirschsprung Disease here at National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC) (Opens in new window.)
