Baby Not Having As Much Feed As Usual

by Emma
(Derby)

My little girl was born 6 weeks early. She is now 6 weeks old.

She was drinking a 5 ounce bottle maybe sometimes just leaving a little in the bottom, but since yesterday she will only take 2 ounces of her bottles and not pooing as much as usual, after every bottle she is looking like she is trying to poo and makes a lot of grumbling noises, she gets very irritable towards the evening and isn't sleeping at night. She gets bunged up and just not happy.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could help before I can get her into the doc's please?

young baby off feed

if you are bottle feeding, sometimes an IRON formula might cause binding of the bowel movements. if the poo, when it comes, is hard, this would point in that direction. DO NOT change formulas without talking to your doctor first! Babies usually know when things are not right. If you were constipated, would you continue to eat? If you think your baby is bound up, you can get some Glycerin suppositories at your pharmacy. They are very easy to use, and gentle on the baby. Refridgerate after opening them. If you decide to use suppositories, use a lap pad under the baby's butt, they work almost immediately.

prematurity and feeding issues response
by: lilputitat

This is a common concern among parents of preemies. I had four premature infants myself, all boys :) As the infant matures so does the dietary needs of the infant. What you saw as eager feeding in the first few weeks was your daughter "catching up" in her growth needs. This is common to both formula and breastfed infants.
As your daughter gets older her needs change, you will see decreases and increases in appetite many times in the first year. Commonly these benchmarks occor at 6 weeks, 9 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 1 year. It also depends on when you introduce solids and how your child grows. The amount of what your baby consumes isn't as much a concern as how frequently she wets and poops per day. At such an early age if she isn't wetting 6-12 diapers and soiling at least 1 or 2 times a day, this could be cause for a concern. Grunting and pushing and fussing is normal as a baby gets older but lack of a bowel movement for a couple of days or more is a sound reason to call a pediatrician.

Good luck with your new baby and enjoy her first year!

Not eating?
by: Linda

Ever have a day when you just weren't hungry?

Babies are people too (just small ;-)! Your child will have days of eating alot and days of eating only a little. If she completely stops eating that is a matter for concern. At 6 weeks she should be on breast or formula only. Offer sterile water also. My kids never liked water, but then they were breast babies. I would not change the formula before talking to the doctor, but sometimes babies just don't like the formula you are offering and would prefer something else - it's worth looking into. Enjoy your baby!
