Baby Hits Head And Doesn't Cry

My baby hits his head quite often rolling and crawling around the house, and usually doesn't even react. I know he feels pain at least in the rest of his body, but is there such thing in feeling no pain on your head?

Not likely ill!
by: Baby Help Line

Hi,

I'm not aware of such an illness, where a person can feel pain all over but for the head. It is probably much more likely that your baby is so occupied that he simply doesn't care. You mention that he is crawling around.

I guess this means that he is probably some 7-9 months old or older. It is a busy age! Most likely, your baby is just used to bumping into things with his head and since the scull is hard, he just goes on with his adventures.

There is a very rare illness where a person doesn't feel any pain at all anywhere, but there are only some 35 people in the world who have been diagnosed with this ever.

What happens if you poke your baby's head? Does he seem to notice what you do?

If you seriously think something could be wrong, bring it up with a pediatrician.

Good luck and let me know of your progress!

Paula

No pain?
by: Devon

I doubt that there is anything wrong, but I always suggest if you are concerned about something to ask your pediatrician, you can never be too careful. With that said, I think that many babies either have a high tolerance for minor bumps and bruises or are simply preoccupied. My 9 month old twins have bumped about every inch of their bodies on something or other and have barely made a peep. Where as my 4 year old, who knows that if he cries he will get the attention he thinks it deserves, will break into tears at the slightest bump. I think children are trained to react a certian way to little bumps but newborns, uless they are in a lot of pain, don't yet know that they are supposed to react at all.

No pain disease
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

If anyone is truly worried that their child does not feel any pain, you can find information about the disease Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis (CIPA) here.

It is a very rare disease, so most likely your child is NOT suffering from it.

The sense of pain in babies has been shown to develop early; a lot earlier that anyone would think some 20 years ago. Even as early as when 20 weeks pregnant, studies have found that the fetus actually is likely to feel pain.

25 years ago it was widespread to even do major surgery on newborn babies without anesthesia.

Read a fascinating article about the doctor who found out that newborn babies do feel pain here on NYT.

So unless your baby happens to suffer from a very rare disease, he or she is most likely feel pain, but ignoring it, because the world simply is too exciting!

Hope this helps,

Paula
