Baby Having Hard Stools On Soy Milk

by Alexandra

My son is 2 1/2 months. He is on soy milk and having hard stools sometimes and sometimes he even has blood is his stools. My doctor told me to give him Gerber prune juice, but I don't know if I should go ahead and change the formula or continue to give him the baby prune juice.

What should I do?

Baby Help Line:

Soy Milk Formula And Constipation

It sounds your little son is having a hard time...

I assume that cow's milk isn't an alternative, since he is on soy formula? Have you also tried hypoallergenic formula? They are more expensive, but often work well for babies with protein allergies or significant intestinal problems. Two examples are Alimentum and Nutramigen.

The protein components in these formulas have been predigested into basic amino acids, which is why many infants can tolerate them.

You could discuss such a solution with your baby's doctor.

Prune isn't dangerous, I just feel that it would be better to find a formula that works for your child, if possible.

Warm wishes,

Paula

Hi,

Formula fed babies are often more constipated than breast fed babies, just offer your baby boiled water after a feed, this will help loosen his bowels. Get him checked again though if still passing blood.

Constipated baby

Both my sons were on formula and very constipated. I found a pro biotic called Bio Gia worked wonders. It's pretty expensive but I would recommend you try it. 5 drops a day helps keep them regular. I still use it for my toddler when he gets a bit constipated.
Switching formula won't work. My sons were on normal formula until we found out they were allergic to cow protein. We switched them to Nutramigen and they were still constipated. Try the pro biotics, you won't regret it

dont feed your kids soy

Soy is a mild toxic which can lead to numerous health problems. Natural soy must be cooked for very long periods before becoming safe to consume.
Sanitarium, a 'health food company', in Australia was sued over misleading consumers on the basis of health on their soy products. Cows milk is not good either. The way the milk is treated it is almost impossible for our bodies to pull the calcium out of it. Finding sources of calcium from elsewhere is the best you can do. If you must drink milk, look for organic cows milk. If you can get to a dairy farm where the cows are grass fed, take some fresh from the vat.
Teeth can only absorb calcium up to about an age of 14 as there is no marrow.

Soy Milk

I suggest switching formula. It's not good to give baby boys soy milk because of all the estrogen in it. There have been many studies on this over the past few years, not sure if you know that or not. I hope everything works out with your little one!
