Baby Has Not Pooped in a Week

My daughter is 10 months old. She is still breastfed, but also drinks formula, juice, and eats a variety of baby and solid food. It has been about a week since she pooped really good. She has had 2 very small bowel movements, but they were very hard.

Is this normal or does she need to see her pediatrician?

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi!

It seems to me as if your daughter is at least mildly constipated. That doesn't mean you have to take her to a doctor unless she is pain, but you might want to give her foods that improves the situation. Try giving her prune juice or prunes, pear, kiwi, apricots, apple juice and plenty breast milk if that works for you. Avoid blue berries, bananas and carrots until her stomach is back to normal.

Do you have any idea what might be causing the constipation? Have you changed her diet in the past few weeks, for example? Think through if you have made any major changes and consider stepping back a bit on those particular foods for a while.

If she continues to have problems passing stools or if it becomes painful for her, you might want to talk to a doctor to rule out any allergies as well as to get help with laxatives if necessary.

I hope this helps!

/Paula
