Baby Constipation in 6 Months Old

by Babar
(birmingham)

My baby is 6.5 mths old and is breastfed. After starting her weaning, she is most of the time constipated with very hard stool even tinged with fresh blood, she cries a lot during passing stool.

Why is she so constipated and what should I do about it?

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi!

I assume that you have started to introduce solid foods? (If not, then get back to me!) Well, if the introduction of solids is the reason for you baby's constipation, this is quite a common problem. Our youngest baby has the same problem and it is really awful to hear the baby cry and be in pain.

What I did was to go very slowly with the solid food and to make sure he got foods that helped reduce the risk of constipation. For example, I gave him quite a lot of prune puree with every meal. Other good fruits to use are pears and kiwi. I also tried to make sure that he drank a lot of liquid. That can be hard if your daughter doesn't like water very (many breast fed babies seem to not like water that much). A bit of prune or pear juice mixed with water can be an alternative.

Adding 1 teaspoon of flax seed oil per day to your baby's diet may also help.

If you have also introduced formula recently, try different kinds to see if one works better for your baby. Milk-free products can some times help.

I really hope this helps! Lot's of liquid - water or breast milk, a slow introduction of foods, and a large share of fruits that help preventing constipation in the diet should help your baby.

Good luck!

Paula

fissures
by: Anonymous

i think your baby is having anal fissures... consult a doctor... try warm bath, this will help in healing. Prune juice is best for constipation. but for blood, do not ignore this or else it will cause a lot of pain for the baby. Consult doctor right away. if hard stools will continue, fissures will not heal fast and its VERY PAINFUL!!!!!

no casein
by: Anonymous

if your baby is passing blood, most likely it is allergy. Lots of babies are allergic to casein that is found in cows milk and soy proteins. They are not able to break down the larger proteins that are found in 200+ pound cows. Try eliminating cow milk and soy and see what happens. Other foods that could be problem are corn, peanuts, other nuts. Introduce one food at a time, and see what happens

good luck!
