Baby Choking, Not Breathing

by Foster
(Melbourne, Fl)

Our 8-month old grand daughter burped and got strangled on the juices. My wife and I had a time getting her to breath again. Every time she breathed a little, she would chock-up again.

This went on for 3 or 4 minutes. We were becoming very concerned. We held her face down slightly tipping her body toward the floor while hitting her on the back. We would then hold her upright to let her breath. Finally, she began breathing again, struggling at first then began breathing okay.

How is this situation best handled?

You handled the situation just fine. It is so had not to panic in situations like these. Babies get strangled very easily. It is best to keep them straight up when strangling on fluid so it does'nt run in her nose. Your grand daughter may have a little bit of reflux. This will cause her stomach contents to come back up at any time. If it happens anymore you may want to ask her pediatrician. Best wishes to your family. LIZ
