Baby Bats At My Hand When Spoon Feeding

by Kati
(Bradley, IL)

I have been spoon feeding my baby since he was around 2 months old. He is now 8 mos and for the last month, he has been batting at my hand when I feed him. Is there anyway I can stop this? thanks!

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Kati!

Have you tried distracting him by for example giving him his own spoon to hold and "eat" with? All my kids have had periods like that, when they try to grab the spoon, the plate or refuse to be fed. To offer a spoon, cup or even some finger foods in a while can be a great help.

Unless he is batting the spoon because he is full or dislikes the food, discration should work.

Prepare for a greasy period, but the more you let your baby practise, the faster he'll learn to feed himself.

Hope this helps!
