Baby And Daddy

My baby just turned 4months ..... Why does he cry when he sits with his dad? I feel so frustrated because I can't leave him with his dad when I want to go out.

He is also not a very happy baby. He cries a lot not for long periods to think he has colic. He cries on and off but with his dad he cries all the time. What is the problem?

Bonding Baby with Daddy
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi,
It is really hard for Moms when you can't get a break. Babies are far more attached to their mother's - after all they start life inside you. You smell all nice and milky, you are probably far more attuned to how to sooth him.

Babies do get used to Dad, but sometimes only Mom will do. I would recommend a front pack to carry baby in, colicky babies need far more body contact, and that is also a great way for him to bond more with his Dad. Babies are usually soothed more by walking around than by sitting and holding. It may be that Dad can go for a walk while you have an hour to yourself. Being outside is often far more interesting and distracting for uncomfortable babies. Gradually as he gets older, and the more interaction he has with Dad, the easier it will be.

If Dad can make lots of eye contact and play lots of smiley games like blowing raspberries, and peepo, then your baby will gain more confidence with him. Dads can often be a little scary, big deep voices, rougher movements, different smells etc. And often the time we want to hand over the baby, is late in the day, baby is tired and Mom is getting a bit stressed and wants to get dinner on, and he will pick up on your withdrawal. And just when you most need a break, all he wants is you!

This is the time when you need so much patience, and just remember how much you love him - that is what he needs to know, as he gets more confidence and gets more comfortable he will be a happier baby.

Enjoy your little boy,
