A Lot Of Sleep For 4 And Half Mth Baby

by Jessica
(Hamler, Oh)

Ok my friend has a 4 and half mth old baby girl, she has been putting baby Elli to bed around 9:30pm and Elli wont wake up til 12:30 almost 1pm the next day. Could there be something wrong with her?

Another thing while she's sleeping Elli's right hand will be purple... Personally I don't think that's right, I think something could be wrong with her, any suggestions?

Some thoughts on sleeping baby
by: Baby Help Line - Paula

Hi Jessica,

What a great friend you are, who cares so much about the well being of your friends little daughter.

First to her sleep pattern. I agree that sleeping from 9.30 pm to 12.30 the next day is a long time; around 15 hours. At her age, the average amount of sleep per day is just that; 15 hours. So if the little girls doesn't sleep very much between 12.30 and going to bed at 9.30 pm, she is actually completely normal regarding the hours of sleep. But then I would say that sleeping for such a long time without waking up at all at her age is still probably unusual. Doesn't she wake up to eat at all?

But if she grows, eats well, is a happy baby and meets her milestones, I don't think there is anything to worry about. Most likely she will continue to be a good sleeper, which of course is fantastic from the parents' point of view.

If she does seem weak in anyway, her parents might want to discuss the matter with a pediatrician, or at her next health check up.

Regarding the purple hand - Babies often get blue or purple hands or feet when cold. And at the age of 4 months, she could very well have the habit of sucking her right hand before falling a sleep or even while asleep. When the hand gets wet, it gets cold and hence appears to be purple due to her fair and this skin.

Again, this is normal as long being cool appears as a logical explanation and the skin become pink again when she wakes up or gets warmer.

But if the parents are worried, by all means make sure to discuss that too with the girl's doctor, so that there are no circulation issues or similar.

I hope this explains a little bit about what might be going on. But sure, there is no reason for NOT consulting a doctor when worried about a small baby.

Good luck to all of you. Enjoy the little girl, she'll be running around your feet before you know it!

Paula
