Basically Wait!
by: Baby Help Line

Hi!

You can give your baby soem prune puree or prune or pear juice, to help the process.

Then think back to if you have changed your baby's diet in the past week. Maybe you are stepping up the solid part of his foods? If you have introduced something that is know to generate hard stools (like carrots, bananas, dairy products, blue berries for example), cut back completely on those foods for a while and then introduce them more slowly.

But you don't have to be too worried, unless your baby seems to be in real pain trying to poop. In such case, talk to his health care provider about using glycerine suppositories or baby laxatives just this once.

Good luck!

a few things to try
by: heather

Prunes, pear juice, apple juice. my son's doctor also recommended trying a tablespoon of karo syrup with 4 ounces of formula. As long as there doesn't seem to be any pain, then just try a few things and wait.

One thing to remember, apple juice helps constipation, apples and apple sauce don't.

Poo Problems?
by: Anonymous

There are many foods that stimulate bowel movements: try pears mixed in with oatmeal, peas, applesauce. Cut out such things as bananas and formula with too much iron for a day or two. My son goes through the same thing. He'll go everyday with no trouble and then about once a month he gets constipated for a few days. I just change his diet slightly. For us, milk, peanut butter, bananas, are probably the biggest culprits.

Good luck and try not to worry. I think all babies go through these unpleasant times.
