8 Month Wont Sleep!

by Ashley
(Duluth Mn)

My 8 month old baby girl won't go to sleep, it is now 2:30 am and every time I put her in her crib she cries really hard, basically screaming! I don't know what to do, this has never happened before, I have fed her, changed her diaper and even gave her bath. She doesn't have temperature or anything. She looks really tired, she yawned and rubbed her eyes but she wont go to sleep and its way past her bedtime.

Any suggestions would be great!

Rest together?

Hi Ashley,

It sounds like you have a very determined little daughter; which is great. Girls need to be strong! She is obviously telling you very clearly that she doesn't want to sleep in her crib.

The question then is of course why and how to handle the situation. At 8 months old, your daughter may very well be suffering from separation anxiety. Many babies have that to some extent at around 7 to 10 months old. They are developing and starting to realize that they are a separate person from their mother - which really terrifies them! During this time many babies want to be carried all the time and they need to learn slowly that mom is still around even if they are not on her body. But this takes time for them and be left alone in a crib at this point is pure torture for them. If you think this might be the case, consider letting your daughter fall asleep next to you for a while. When she gets older you can start transferring her back to the crib while awake. (You can of course put her there when she is sound asleep too.)

If this is not the case, she might also simply be too tired to be able to calm down. Then try to put her to bed earlier; maybe after a nice evening ceremony, such as a arm nice bath and reading a picture book together or singing a lullaby. Babies are routine lovers, so if you try to stick to the same routine every night, she'll know what to expect, which might help her settle. (This is great for all babies, regardless of if she sleeps in her crib or not.)

Hope this helps a little bit,

Paula
