7 Month Old Won't Wean

How can I get my 7 month old to wean off breast feeding? She refuses to take a bottle from me whether it is formula or breast milk. She will eat a bottle only if I am not around. I am at the end of rope.

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi there!

That sounds bad; don't let go of the rope!

You're definitely not the first mom to have a stubborn, breastfed baby that prefers the "real thing". Your daugher is certainly not stupid if that is any help. Of course she knows what she can get from you...

If you can have dad or a friend help you out over a few days and take charge of every feeding, then it is probably going to be easier. But then again, that will be a very quick weaning and you'll have to decide if that is what you want. If you could take it a bit more slowly, and gradually wean your baby, it might be easier for both of you. In such case, you could pump and have someone help you as much as possible with bottle-feeding (or sippy-cup?) feeding during a couple of days, and hopefully she will learn to accept it.

Have you tried our bottle-feeding tips? I know several moms have been helped by them.

And here are some additional tips about weaning that I have given earlier.

Good luck!

Paula

baby and weaning
by: Anonymous

My baby was exactly the same way. Everyone told me not to go cold turkey and instead gradually wean her off, but it wouldn't work.

If she saw me she knew she didn't have to eat the bottle. In the end I just said oh well and just stopped breastfeeding altogher and only offered the bottle. It hurt my breasts like crazy and she wasn't exactly happy, but it worked. Within 2 days she was perfectly fine with the bottle. Though she refused to eat for about 1/2 a day. Now she is great with bottle, the only thing is she has to have a specific bottle, but at least it worked.

My 7 months old also wouldn't wean
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I also tried to wean my baby onto the bottle with no success. But when I gave her a sippy cup, it actually worked. I had to combine it with stepping up solid foods, because she wouldn't drink as much from the sippy cup (I think) as from the breast.

I also had to try three different brands of formula before I found one that she actually likes. Once she started to enjoy her formula in a cup, I managed to get her to drink it from the bottle as well.
