6wks Crying

My baby doesn't cry, she screams a lot and loud.
I thought newborn babies were supposed to cry and grunt, not scream. I really don't know what's wrong with her. Why is my 6 weeks old baby screaming?

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Mom!

You're facing a very common situation for new parents! Newborn babies cry (or scream) a lot and many time you simply won't have a clue why.

You can feed them, change the diapers, carry them around, burp them, try to put them to sleep and they just continue crying... Very exhausting and stressful, especially the first time.

Research has shown that babies cry the most when they are around 6 weeks old, then it starts improving unless they get colic. It is completely normal for 6 week old babies to cry for around 2 hours per day.

If your baby does cry a lot more than that, she might be developing colic, but it doesn't have to be that! If she cries for more than three hours non-stop several days per week, contact a doctor to discuss colic as a possible explanation.

Have you tried the 5 S's? You'll find them here.

And here is a little guide to why babies may be crying.

Personally, I've been nursing my newborn babies a lot during their first couple of months, especially in the evening when many babies are extra fussy. In particular our youngest son more or less spent his evenings with a nipple in his mouth for at least two months. :-)

With another baby in the house (18 months older), I was much more interested in keeping our newborn baby silent than having him eat on regular hours...

So if you do breastfeed, consider offering your breast a little bit more often and see if it helps.

Hope any of this may help you!

Paula
