5.5 Mth Baby Having Milk Strike!

by Ling Ling
(Singapore)

Hi.. My baby has always been a fussy drinker since she was barely a month old but it's getting worst!

For the past 1 week she completely rejects all milk feeds. We managed to sleep feed her last time but even that doesn't work on her now..

She'll wake up after a few sucks and reject.. So its simply impossible to feed her, be it awake or asleep.

We've started her on 2x a day rice cereals (2-3 tbspoon each) for a few weeks now and due to milk rejection, we've to resort in giving more rice cereals at around 4x a day (mixed with some milk in attempt to inject as much milk into her).. even so, she still gets cranky sometimes midway through the feeds.

Thing is though my pd said its ok to give her more solids and water now due to this rejection, I'm worried it'll be too much for her stomach /digestive system to take it. Thus would like to seek 2nd opinion on this.

And also since she rejects milk, could someone or a dietitian pls advise me on an alternative daily diet plan that I could set for her? Not forgetting we still need to inject as much calcium into her at this age (5.5mths old currently weighing 7.6kg for your info)
thanks

No Milk for Baby
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi Ling,

It is a shame your baby is not wanting to take the milk feeds - you didn't say whether you were breast feeding or formula?

We are not dietitians or doctors here, just Moms with varying experiences, my training is in early childhood, but from a developmental perspective.

Just follow the advice of your dietitian, and you are right to add milk to everything so she is getting as much as possible. Usually the recommended time for solids is around 6 months so she is not far off that.

You will know if her tummy is not taking it, she will be uncomfortable, bloated or vomit it back up.

I assume you have seen a doctor since you mention a dietitian. But sometimes Babies have thrush in their mouth which makes sucking uncomfortable, so that could be something to check. (You can read about baby thrush symptoms and remedies here.)

You could try giving her milk out of a cup, my daughter would not use a bottle, and when I got pregnant again (by accident!) when she was three months, my milk disappeared and I had to change to formula. She HATED the bottle, so in the end I used a cup - it was messy, but she slurped and sucked it up and still kept putting on a reasonable amount of weight.

There is no such thing as a perfect baby, the normal benchmarks for babies is just based on an average, and most babies are either side of that range. So just do what you can to get calories into her - make it fun, don't get into a battle to try to feed her. The older she gets the more you can introduce other foods and again add milk to them.

Best of luck,
Annie

milks strike
by: Ling

Annie
thanks for ur advises.. My bb is on Formula.
Dont tink she has thrush cos her tongue looks ok (understand thrush is a coat of white stuff on the tongue?) and she's willing to take water from the bottle!! She loves water and simply hates milk i guess... HAd also tried sippy cup but she'll play around with the teat rather then to drink the content -_-
Basically for this daughter i've tried whatever i could - imagine i've even resorted to praying in temples!! whahahaa...
Initially i thought her rejection is due to her teething but her tooth has already erupted so i dun see any reason why she could still be feeling uncomfortable.

My baby also refuses milk
by: Anonymous

my baby 5.5 monthold she refuse drink more than 2 oz evry 3h and I read that now she must drink around 36oz per 24 h acording to her weight. She doesn't like milk so i give her rice cearel and this make her not take the 2oz even bcz I give food 3time a day.

MY 6 MONTH OLD SON HAS ALSO STARTED REJECTING BOTTLE COMPLETELY AND NOT GAINING ENOUGH WEIGHT.TRIED SIPPY CUP BUT OF NO USE.WHAT I DO IS FIRST TRY TO FEED HIM THROUGH BOTTLE AND IF HE DOESNOT TAKE I MIX THE CEREAL IN IT AFTER 20 MINUTES . ITS REALLY HECTIC BUT THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO GIVE SOME MILK TO HIM.
