5 Months And Vomiting Suddenly

My son was doing fine on Simalic Advance Ready to Feed from birth to 5 months and suddenly started vomiting/spitting up.

Has been to the dr. They have tried him on several different types of formulas (Simalic Advance which he's been on since birth till 5 months, Simalic Soy, Simalic Senstive and now Simalic Alimentum) and he still takes his bottle (cut him back from 7oz 4x a day to 5oz 5x a day) and he still gets puffed eyes, gags some, and throws up a month to 2 mouths full almost every bottle.

The doctor has now put him Simply Thick to thicken his formula which cut it down some, to about a mouth full but is still gagging and so on off and on till his next feed and has been doing this for 2 weeks.

My son does have a shunt from water on the brain at birth but has had a CT scan done, a xray of his stomach to check the shunt tubing and a upper gi for blockages. They have also know he has reflux and is currently on Prevacid. Should I ask the dr to go a urinalyses (I know I misspelled) or are there any other suggestions anyone can make? PLEASE if anyone can help, email me JLJ984 @ yahoo.com. Thank you!

Second opinion to ease your mind
by: Baby Help Line

Hi,

I hope some of the parents around here might offer your their experiences. Since we are not doctors, but parents, we can't however offer you medical advice.

But, judging from what you say, the reflux, possibly together with some sensitivity, does seem to me like it could explain a major part of his problems. Babies allergic to cow's milk protein are often allergic to soy protein too, so if that might be the case, your baby needs a hydrolysate formula, where the proteins are broken down in very small pieces.

I also understand that you have already take precautions, such as feeding him more often and less at each time and holding him in an upright position.

However, since your feeling is that the doctors haven't really found the cause and solution to your baby's problems, I thing it is definately a good idea to get a second opinion or ask them to do further examinations.

You know your child the best and it is great that you don't give up!

I wish you the best and hope that other parents with similar parents join in here to give you support!

You can also read about another baby, who also started spitting up at 5 months here.

Protein allergy?
by: Lisa

Hi,

Have you considered milk and soy protein allergy? A lot of babies that are allergic to cow's milk protein are also allergic to soy protein. SO no formulas based on either of these will work.
