2 Year Old Has Only 12 Teeth

My 2.1 year old son has only 12 teeth, 8 fully grown incisors and 4 half grown premolars.

He started teething only in 15 months that too after giving calcium tonic for a full month. He got this 12 teeth 5 months back and still his other teeth are not growing. I tried calcium tonic again but no use.

He finds difficult to chew food because of this problem.

Is this any calcium deficiency? He drinks 3 glasses of cow milk daily and is very active apart from this. I am worried because he is not teething properly.

Hi Nanthini,

How good that you keep track of and worry about your son's development. It is true that it is a bit unusual to only have 12 teeth at the age of 2 years. On the other hand, since your son only got his first tooth at 15 months, it is not very strange that he continues to be late in this particular area. Most often when the teeth erupt is a genetic thing rather than sign of any illness. Do you know if you our your husband were late with erupting teeth?

And since he get so much calcium and is active, I doubt his diet is a problem. Nevertheless, I would suggest that you book an appointment with a pediatric dentist. They can examine his gums and do an x-ray to make sure all the teeth are there and will erupt over time.

actually my husband and i both got teeth soon.. all teeth developed by 1 year itself. and i take all care in his diet too. he eats rice, all vegetables, dhal, spinach etc. i think i must visit the dentist once, there is no special paediatric dentist available here so i must only see a general dentist. thanks for the suggestion.
