13 Months Baby Cries At 3 Am And Before Going To Bed

by CLARA
(WHITTIER, CA)

My 13 month old cries before she sleep and wakes up at 3 am for the last 4 months.

I do not work, I spend all day with her, and before when she was 6 to 7 months she was great; no crying, no waking up in the middle of the night. Now is amazing, she cries every night around 3 am. I breastfeed her and sleep with her. Then at 4 am I leave her in her crib and if I am lucky she doesn't wake up again when I go to my bed.

My parents say that I am spoiling her because we are always home, especially now at Winter. I know she has been teething, but this long time is too much. What could it be? I also need to stop nursing her, but she won't drink whole milk ever!

Thanks

Waking and Weaning
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi Clara,

What a little cutie! Personally, I don't believe you can spoil a baby. They are crying because they can't communicate their needs any other way. And it is hard as a parent sometimes to figure out why they are crying!

You don't have to jump the minute she squeaks tho, sometimes babies do a little grizzle and go back to sleep or settle. But on the whole they are crying because they need you to comfort or sort something out.

Babies always change, and it can be a bit of a shock if you have had a placid easy going baby, and now a crying one! Again, it is all just a stage and she will move on to the next stage in good time.

Regarding weaning her - it is difficult if she won't take whole milk. You can try doing half and half for a while, express some and mix it with ordinary milk and find an interesting sippy cup for her to use. You may have to try mostly breast milk for a while, and gradually increase the amount of whole milk. It will take her a while to get used to a cup too.

You can also put milk in lots of dishes, custards, add to mashed veges etc so she gets milk that way, and most babies like yogurt.
Just gradually cut back how many feeds she has from you until it is just bed times. I wouldn't rush to stop those feeds as she is already upset or hungry in the night. Night time can be a long time for a baby to go without waking for a feed, and she may simply be hungry by 3 am and need topping up.

Don't worry, she will eventually last the whole night and you will get a good night's sleep again!
Enjoy your lovely wee girl, she's gorgeous!

Hungry baby waking up at night?
by: Paula

In addition to teething and nightmares, any baby in a similar situation could actually be hungry. A possible solution then is to make sure she eats more during the day and that she is really filled up before crashing for the night.

Take a look at the baby feeding schedule here, I used it for my children well into them being toddlers.

Best of luck,

Paula
