10 Week Old Doesn't Like to Sleep Alone

by Kristy
(Chicago, il)

My 10 week old daughter doesn't like to sleep by herself (she wants to be held). Sometimes she will sleep by herself but other times once we put her down she wakes up right away.

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Kristy!

While exhausting, this is very common among young infants. They want to be close to their parents to feel safe!

While this usually gets better over time, as the baby's sleep pattern matures, there are several things you can do to start helping your baby to sleep somewhere else than in your arms.

Just remember that newborn babies do have light sleep and short sleep cycles, which is why it can be so hard to put them down without waking them up.

To improve the situation, I've found the stroller to be a great help when teaching my kids to sleep in their own beds. If possible, bring the stroller inside and use it to rock you baby to sleep. If she wakes up, start rocking again.

Putting her in your bed and lying down next to her, stroking her head may also work.

You'll find several more tips on how to gently help your baby with better sleep routines here.

Be patient and determined and things are likely to improve within weeks. If you browse the questions and answers in our baby sleep help forum, you'll find a lot more tips on how to improve things.

If you need more help, just get back to me!

Good luck!

Paula
