No Pooping!
by: Baby Help Line

Hi,

Pooping enough, too much, wrong color - these are major concerns when we have little ones! You didn't say whether you were breast feeding or formula feeding or anything about your baby's diet so I'll give you some general answers here.

You didn't say how long your daughter has not been pooing. Many babies and toddlers can happily go several days without pooing, or even have a routine of pooing once per week! Sometimes when babies are going through a growth spurt they use up everything they eat and only urinate.

You say your daughter is making herself sick - in what way is she sick? Is it just that you think she should be pooping more often or is she crying and upset? If your baby is also not urinating or you think she is in constant pain, then check it out with your health nurse or pediatrician.

Babies on Formula milk are far more likely to get constipation at times than breast fed babies, so I'll assume you are using formula. Firstly, just check your mixing ratios on the formula tin. I know of a young mother who switched the brand of formula and was mixing the same quantities she was used to. However the new formula had a different ratio. Also some Moms think they are giving their child more nourishment by mixing the formula stronger. This is a sure way to constipation!

If you are sure the formula is the correct mix, also offer water or watered prune juice in between feeds. Particularly if you live in a hot climate, babies can get dehydrated quickly. You can also give her some stewed prunes or apricots if she is enjoying solids.

More often than not, babies are picking up on our worries and concerns. And a worried uptight baby finds it hard to relax and eliminate her waste. If your daughter appears to be uncomfortable you can do a baby massage and gently massage her tummy and all over little body. But this needs to be a loving gentle fun thing to do, not a rubbing to make a poo pop out!

Mostly I have found with the hundreds of parents I have worked with, the biggest impact on our babies is ourselves. Babies are incredibly sensitive to our every mood, after all Mom and Dad are the center of their Universe. So the more we worry and make a big problem out of something the more of a problem it becomes, and the more unhappy our little ones get.

You obviously love your daughter very much and she is lucky to have such a loving home to grow up in. Just relax and enjoy her and have fun with her and she will more likely poop when there is no emphasis on it all.

Good Luck
