1 Week Old Baby Not Waking Up For Feeding

by Vanessa
(port hueneme, ca, usa)

I have a 1 week old baby & last night he didn't wake up at all for a bottle. I had to wake him up myself, is this normal?

Also, when he opened his eyes he had mucus coming out and it seemed like it was kind of hard to open up his eyes. Everyone in this house including my 1 year old daughter has a headcold, could my baby be sick?

Yes normal (but unusual)
by: Baby Help Line - Paula

Hi Vanessa,

Congratulations on your little boy!

Regarding his sleep pattern; yes sometimes newborn babies sleep through the night. It isn't common, but unless he is a preemie or doesn't eat and wet his diapers, there really isn't much to worry about. It is however a lot more common that they do not sleep through, simply because they need to eat often and also have quite short sleep cycles. (You can read about baby sleep patterns month by month here.)

I know some nurses and doctors still say that newborn babies need to eat every three hours, but I also know that most don't say that anymore (unless the baby is a preemie, doesn't gain weight or is ill.) But do check with your own doctor too!

Most likely your son will not continue to sleep through the night, so you will just remember these rare occasions of consecutive sleep in the months to come. (But with a 1 year old in the house you already know all about that, I guess.)

My youngest actually slept 7 hours the first night after he was born. But it didn't last ;-)

Now to his eyes. It is very common that young babies get eye infections or blocked tear ducts. Try cleaning his eye with a cotton ball dipped in saline solution, which you can buy at the drugstore, and gently wipe the eye from the inside corner out. Use a fresh cotton ball for every wipe. If it continues, also ask his Dr to check the eye, so that he doesn't have an infection that needs some drops or ointment to go away.

Hope this answered your questions! Remember that we are not doctors here, just moms, so always check with your baby's doctor if you are worried.

We had the same thing happen to our boy, our pediatrician suggested that i should try to get off the pain medication, especially Lortab and continue using ibuprofen. Also, give about 6hrs gap between feeding and last time you took Lortab. Of course, this is when you are breast feeding
