1 Month In Pain When Pooping Liquid Yellow

by Kelly
(Salem)

My daughter is breastfed only, no bottle and has been straining HARD to poop and often cries when she poops. My husband and I will undress her and try to help her by massaging her back or putting pressure right above her butt. She seems to poop everything out when we wipe and put pressure though. Her poop is also still yellow and very runny. Is all of this normal?

Yes normal to strain
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Hi Kelly,

Congratulations to your daughter! Since she is only nearly 1 month old, I would say yes, what you describe is likely to be completely normal. Young infants often have very immature intenstines and it will take a month or two or even three of straining before their pooping becomes uncomplicated. Baby massage, that you are already using is an excellent way to help your child, just like you have already noticed. Two other possibilities are a warm bath or lightly pressing your daughter's thights and knees towards her stomach when she starts straining or seems to be uncomfortable. The last thing is something I often did with two of our children at night when they started grunting and makeing "newborn noises" at around 3.30 am. It seemed like both of them gathered gas during the night and by 3.30 or 4 am they needed some help to get rid of it to be able to continue sleep.

The way you describe her stools; yellow and runny, is also completely normal for a breastfed baby.

So most likely she is simply newborn and what you are already doing to help her is great. It will get better gradually during the coming month or six weeks.

Of course, if she seems to be in huge pain, like really screaming, or of you feel she might be sick for some other reason, you should let a doctor examine her.

Warm wishes,

Paula

pooping home remedy
by: Anonymous

Hi there
My son is 11 weeks old and did not pooped for 3 days.I tried a cotton bud soaked in gentle baby soap for few minutes and applied on his rectal area and lil inside and he pooped in few seconds. It works like anema givento an adult when constipated for so many days.It didnt harm my baby infact he stopped crying and slept after pooping.
I hope that will work for you.

I think some of these answers are common causes and I think that's great. Our son started soon after he was born and was crying all the time we thought it was colic at first. Then as time went by we realized it was much worse than colic. He was crying in pain, not baby want to eat pain but real pain. We took him in and the Dr. sent us to a specialist and they did a couple of things to test him. One was a biopsy to make sure he didn't have Hirschsprung's Disease. That came back negative. Then we did a barium enema and that came back negative. So after all that basically we could do nothing. They put him on medicine for acid reflux but that wasn't helping either. We also did Milacon, with no real effects. So at the end of the day we have been doing adult suppositories to help him get the gas out and help him poop as well. The color and liquid of the poop is normal FYI. The questions you need to ask yourself before you spend a ton of money and heartache on tests. One you need to cut out milk if you drink it. If that doesn't help cut out Chocolate. If that doesn't help cut out all hot or spicy foods. If that doesn't help Then I would start to go down are road. Our boy is 4 months now and still has the same issues. Seems to run in my family though so could be heredity. Unfortunately there are other medical alternatives out there but we are choosing those as a last resort. If something works for you post back. We are still searching. Good Luck

3 month old in pain when pooping liquid yellow
by: Anonymous

My son is 3 months and has the exact symptoms of the comment left by anonymous on July 5th, 2010. On there, it states that you put baby thru a bunch of tests to figure out why it hurts baby to push poop out so much. At that time, you still had no answers...one year later...was wondering if you figured anything out to help my son? Thanks!
